Garmr (or Garm) is typically described as a blood-stained hound or wolf associated with the underworld, particularly as guardian of the entrance of helheim. He is often chained in front of a cave called Gnipahellir, which is sometimes thought of as the gateway to Helheim. 
 
It is said that at Ragnarok, Garmr breaks free from his chains with a mighty fury and fierce determination to have an intense battle with the God Tyr. The battle ends with Garmr and Tyr killing one another. 
 
Garmr is listed as the "Best of Hounds" in the Grimnismal and the mightieat of monsters in the Prose Edda.
